Maverick Comes to Vienna
After a hiatus of 30 plus years, Maverick Leathers was re-launched on 1 August 2011, and is based in Vienna, Austria,
Like all things called "maverick", Maverick Leathers is ultimately named after Samuel Augustus Maverick, a Texas lawyer, politician, land baron, hero of the Texas War of Independence, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Mere days before the Alamo fell, Travis sent Maverick to the Texas independence convention to urge them to send reinforcements. Unfortunately, the Alamo fell with the loss of all of its defenders before help could arrive.
Tough-minded and ultra-independent, Maverick became most famous for refusing to brand his cattle at a time when your brand was your proof of ownership, He was so notorious for this that his name eventually was used to described all unbranded cattle. If it was unbranded, it must be a "maverick." This usage was later expanded to describe individuals who were so independently-minded that they wore no-one's "brand."
Maverick Leathers is proud to bear the name Maverick. For we think our products are as "Texas-tough" as Samuel. And we offer them to the rugged individualists who understand and appreciate their quality and durability.
In short, we provide high quality, hand made leather goods made out of the best leathers available to people who not only expect, but demand the best.
We are not the least expensive leather goods company. Nor do we want to be. We're happy being the best at what we do, and providing our products to people who understand and appreciate the quality they are paying for.
Two things are necessary to achieve this quality. The first is that the product be made with the highest quality leather. But even the best leather can be ruined by a poor craftsman. So, the second thing necessary to achieve our quality is a skilled artisan who can turn the leather into a beautiful piece of functional art.
That is why Maverick uses only the highest quality, full-grain tooling leather, and time-honored, traditional hand tooling and carving techniques that were first practiced by the Moors; who taught them to their descendants, the Spaniards; who took them to the Americas; where they eventually evolved into the South Western / Sheridan style of carving practiced in the States today. Consequently, LJ Stevens, the self-taught maverick leather artisan behind Maverick Leathers, has brought American-style leather craft back to its home continent.
In fact, to the best of our knowledge, we are the only company producing the American-style products in a market that is dominated by Renaissance and Medieval style leather work. So, for the time being, we have the market all to ourselves.
Our products have proven very popular both with the buying public and event organizers. As of this writing, 7 April 2012, we have been juried into every event/market to which we've applied, and have been invited to attend more events than we can fit into our schedule.
So we are looking to a very busy and profitable market season.
If you would like to see our products, talk with Maverick or Birgit, a.k.a. Mrs. Maverick, or even buy something you see and take a fancy to here on our site, checkout our event calendar to see when we will be at an event near you.
